Description
Salt Rising Bread is an Appalachian tradition now available to order online. We scoured the internet for local recipes and techniques so that we could bring the authentic flavors and aromas of Salt Rising Bread to you. This bread is traditionally made with a potato and corn meal starter, which captures wild bacteria that ferment the dough. The natural bacterial fermentation leads to a slightly cheesy aroma and flavor. We liken it to an asiago cheese bread for those who have never had this treat. The loaf is yellow in color, dense, with a crusty exterior.
There are many different regional variations of Salt Rising bread. Our local, traditional recipe is leavened with bacteria found on potatoes, and not yeast resulting in a loaf that is not a light, fluffy bread. Our bread is crusty and dense with a tight crumb and a cheese-like aroma.
Salt Rising Bread is traditionally served toasted.
We generally bake off the bread on Monday evenings and ship on Tuesdays. Orders placed by Sunday night will generally be shipped the very next day. The shipping costs are what the US Postal Service charges us. There is little that we can do to offset the shipping charges.
We apologize, but for shipped products, we offer no refunds. If you receive a package that is damaged in shipping or never receive your package, you can file a claim with the USPS using your tracking number. You should take pictures if possible of the damaged packaging to support your claim.

This bread brings back memories of my childhood vacations to Northern Michigan. I would eat salt rising bread every morning while at my uncle’s cottage looking out over Lake Michigan. This is the one and only salt rising bread that has the exact consistency and flavor of the bread I enjoyed many years ago. Your bakery has perfected the lost art of making my favorite bread and has brought back so many happy memories for me! Thank you!

I hadn’t had salt rising bread in years because I couldn’t find a bakery that sold it. When I ordered from Willow Pond, I was a bit skeptical but, after my first taste, I was back in my grandmother’s kitchen. I introduced my husband to his first piece and he is hooked too. Thank you.

This salt risen bread is identical to the bread I grew up with.
I’ve tried a couple that I ordered online that might as well been regular white bread.
If you like or are curious about salt risen bread this is the real stuff.

I used to live in Western North Carolina in an area served by the Kerns Bakery. One of my favorites was their salt risen bread toasted for breakfast. When Kerns went out of business, their salt rising bread disappeared with them. I just received my first shipment of your salt risen bread. It was delicious and right on the spot with my memory of years past. Excellent product!
